Ambassatours Charter FAQ
What is a charter and how much does it cost? A charter is a short-term lease of our vehicle and driver. Charter prices will depend on a number of factors including: mileage, destination, days required, and coach usage. Chartering is generally a very economical type of group travel.
Where do you have authority to travel? From our base in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, we have the authority to travel across the entire United States and Canada. However all charters must leave from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland.
Why should I travel by motor coach (bus)?
- Buses are safe. Transport Canada regulates the Canadian charter bus industry. Bus operators are required to maintain a log for miles and hours of service.
- Buses reach more destinations. Your Ambassatours Gray Line charter bus will take you right to the doorstep of your destination. Planes and trains only take you to the nearest stop.
- Buses go where you want to go. They’re always ready to take you and your group to wherever you want to be, whenever you want to be there, for your entire stay.
- Buses are the most fuel efficient. According to the 1999 U.S. Department of Energy book data, 199 buses only use 797 BTU's per passenger mile. Compare this to planes, which use 4847, trains 2450 and 3639. (Source: Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Centre for Tansportation Analysis).
- Buses are better for the environment. Because of their fuel efficiency, buses are better for the environment than most other alternatives.
- Buses are inexpensive. Chartering a bus is typically half the cost of flying. And this doesn’t even include the convenience they offer in terms of your local travel plans.
- How much of a deposit is required?
In most cases, we do not require a deposit at the time of booking.
- When is the final payment due?
Generally, we require full payment 21 days before departure.
- What is your cancellation policy?
Our cancellation policy allows you to cancel without penalty up to 31 days prior to departure.
- How far ahead should I make arrangements?
It is never too soon to organize your charter. There are some times during the year when we are extremely busy, so book early! Weekends are usually when we’re busiest, with weddings, sports team travel, holiday shopping, etc. so don't hesitate to book well in advance. Subject to availability, we do accept last minute bookings.
- Do I need to tip the bus operator?
If the service you receive merits a gratuity, you may tip the operator. As a guideline, the most common driver gratuity across North America is 10%.
- Do I pay for parking, tolls and other fees?
We generally do not include parking, tolls, or other fees in our initial quotes. We can arrange to have them included at your request. We clearly outline what is included in the quotation. Just be sure to ask us if these fees are included before signing the booking contract.
- Do I need to book the hotel room for the bus operator?
Yes, for overnight trips, it is customary to book the operator's hotel room. Check with the hotel, as some provide the bus operator’s room at no charge. Ask for someone in group sales at the hotel to ensure the operator's room is free.
- Are alcohol or smoking allowed?
Smoking is prohibited on all our coaches. Alcohol is not allowed on buses in Canada.
- Can I purchase just one or two seats for a trip? Ambassatours Gray Line is also a tour operator and offers daily sightseeing and multi-day tours around the world. Seats on these tours are available for individual purchase.
- I have a CDL License. Can I charter a bus without a operator?
No, our insurance policy doesn't allow it.
- Who drives your vehicles?
We take tremendous pride in our professional drivers. They are trained to drive the vehicle you have chartered.
What is the difference between Charter Services and Tour Services? Charter Services should be used if you only need a bus to complete your travel plans. The Tour Services section of this website allows you to make all of your group's arrangements: hotel reservations, tours, etc., browse a list of sample group tours, or purchase individual seats on a scheduled tour.
